Values

We expect the following of every participant, in all technical work.

  • Measurement decides. A simulation is a hypothesis until a measurement agrees with it.
  • Every number carries its unit and its status. Measured, simulated, design or estimated, with its tolerance, its provenance and, where relevant, its convention: full or half angle, peak or average.
  • Aims are stated as aims. We say what we aim to do, and we claim only what we have done.
  • Negative results are reported. A design that failed, a geometry that would not converge or a supplier that did not deliver is written down promptly.
  • Work is documented. Members turn over every two or three years. The standard is that a competent stranger can continue the work from the repository alone.
  • Safety rules are followed exactly. Nobody operates hazardous equipment without training and authorisation.
  • Nothing is understood by only one person. A subsystem that a single member can explain is a defect to be corrected, and every role is handed over with overlap.
